When the room smells like an old campfire the morning after
What the visit takes in
A sweep is often the cheapest cure for a fireplace that has started to smoke. We lay drop sheets, seal the opening, and brush and vacuum the flue, smoke chamber and smoke shelf, pulling out creosote, leaves and old nesting that choke the draft. Then we light a small test fire or use a smoke pencil to show the smoke rising cleanly. Sweeps start from $230, and you see the before and after photos.
What a dirty flue does to the draft on a cool evening
"It smoked a little last winter, and now it smokes every time." That is how most sweep calls in Pacific Palisades begin, and the cause is usually simple. A fire pulls air because hot gas in the flue is lighter than the air in the room, and that pull depends on how wide a path the smoke has to travel. Creosote builds on the flue walls as a crust, a tar or a flaky glaze, and each layer takes a little off the inside diameter. Add a fall of sycamore leaves on the smoke shelf, or the remains of a nest wedged in the throat above the damper, and the flue can no longer move the volume of smoke your fire makes. The overflow rolls out under the lintel and into the room. A smell often arrives before the smoke does. Creosote soaks up moisture from marine air, so on a damp morning in a canyon house that sour campfire odour drifts down the flue when nothing is burning at all. Brushing the deposits out restores the full width of the flue and usually ends both problems.
Our sweep starts with the kind of fire you would normally build, or a smoke pencil if the hearth is cold, so we can see how the fireplace behaves before anything is touched. Then the opening is sealed with plastic and tape, and a HEPA vacuum runs for the whole visit, which keeps soot out of the rugs and the air you breathe. Rods and brushes sized to your flue tile go up from below, and on many houses we also work down from the roof. The smoke chamber gets scraped by hand, because its sloped walls collect the heaviest buildup and a spinning brush skips the corners. The smoke shelf is cleared of leaves, mortar crumbs and anything else that fell in. At the end we repeat the draft test and you watch the smoke climb straight up. You keep the before and after photos. Sweeps start from $230, and if the brush turns up a cracked tile or a broken damper, we show you the picture and put the repair price in writing instead of guessing at it on the spot.
Glazed creosote, Santa Ana nights and the Rule 445 calendar
Not all creosote comes off the same way. Light, sooty deposits fall away under a stiff brush. A shiny glaze that looks like poured tar is different: it forms when fires smoulder with the damper half closed, or when damp wood burns cool and slow. Glaze is the fuel behind most chimney fires, and we take it seriously in houses above Sunset and along the bluffs, where Santa Ana winds can carry an ember a long way. If we find glaze, we say so plainly, photograph it and explain the removal options before doing anything beyond a standard sweep. A chimney that has already had a fire inside it needs a closer look than a brush can give, so in that case we may suggest a Level 2 camera inspection rather than another pass with the rods. After the Palisades fire of January 2025, many homeowners in Pacific Palisades and Malibu also asked us to check for ash and windblown debris that settled in open flues. That material burns too, so it comes out along with the soot.
How often to sweep depends on how you burn, not on the calendar alone. NFPA 211 calls for a yearly inspection and a cleaning whenever deposits build up enough to matter, and for most wood-burning fireplaces on the Westside that works out to once a season. Houses in Brentwood and Santa Monica that light a fire on a handful of weekends may go longer between sweeps. A home in Beverly Hills with a fire most winter nights may need two. South Coast AQMD Rule 445 adds a wrinkle. On Check Before You Burn no-burn days, wood fires are off limits, so many people make up for it on the allowed nights, often with wetter wood and a smaller, smokier fire. That pattern lays down creosote faster than steady use does. Booking in late summer or early fall, before the first cool week, makes a slot easier to get. Use the call button on this page or the contact form, and mention the last time the fireplace drew well, since that date tells us a lot.

Chimney Sweep in Pacific Palisades
Here the smoke call often comes from a house that was just rebuilt or remodeled: a new tight envelope pulls air down the old flue, or a new roofline now sits higher than the chimney. Owners who stayed through the January 2025 fire also ask us whether heat or ash reached the flue, which a camera answers.

Chimney Sweep in Beverly Hills
Large Beverly Hills living rooms often have wide, tall fireplace openings that look grand but are too large for the flue above them. That mismatch is a classic cause of smoke spilling at the top of the opening, and a smoke guard or glass doors usually cure it without changing the look much.

Chimney Sweep in Brentwood
Big Brentwood houses often have two or three fireplaces sharing one masonry stack. When one fire is lit, smoke can drift down a neighboring flue into another room, a problem that looks like a leak but is really a short flue partition or uneven flue heights at the top.

Chimney Sweep in Malibu
Malibu homes face wind from two directions: onshore breezes most afternoons and hard offshore gusts in fire season. A chimney that draws well on a calm night can puff smoke back into the room when the wind comes over the ridge, so we often look at cap shape before anything else.

Chimney Sweep in Santa Monica
Many Santa Monica houses share a lot line closely with taller neighbors, and a two-storey addition next door can leave an old chimney sitting in a wind shadow. That is a common cause of smoke rolling out of the fireplace on a breezy evening even when the flue is clean.

Chimney Sweep in West Hollywood
In multi-unit buildings, one chimney stack can serve several fireplaces, and a smoky unit may be caused by a neighbor's fire or an old shared flue. We check which flue is which before suggesting any fix, and we note when the work needs the owner or HOA on board.
