What the visit takes in

Many fireplace smells are water, not smoke. When the metal at the roof joint lifts or rusts, rain runs into the masonry and the chimney stays damp, which brings out a sour, musty odour and keeps the flue cold so it draws badly. We trace the wet spot, replace the failed metal pieces, add a cricket behind wide chimneys if water pools there, and seal the joint. Pricing follows the inspection.

Why a fireplace smells worse the day after a storm

The fireplace has not been used in weeks, yet the living room smells like a damp cellar after every rain. That smell is usually water, not smoke. Where a chimney passes through a roof, two different materials meet and move on their own schedules. Wood framing and roofing shift with heat and season while the masonry stays put, so the seal between them relies on layered metal pieces: some tucked under the shingles, others cut into the brick and folded down over them. When those pieces lift, rust or lose their sealant, rain runs behind them and soaks into the brick. Wet masonry holds moisture for days. It dampens the old creosote inside the flue, and that combination gives off the sour, musty odour people often blame on the fireplace itself. On a humid evening in Santa Monica, with the marine layer rolling in, the smell can get stronger even under dry skies.

Damp masonry also has a quieter effect on how the fire behaves. A chimney full of moisture stays cold, and a cold flue takes longer to warm and start drawing. The first few minutes of a fire are when smoke is most likely to roll into the room, and a wet chimney stretches those minutes out. So a roof leak can show up as a smoky start, not only a stain. Other signs to look for: a water mark on the ceiling beside the chimney breast, peeling paint on the surround, white powder on the brick in the attic, or a rusty damper. In Pacific Palisades the salt air speeds up corrosion on older galvanized metal, so the seal can fail on a roof that otherwise looks fine from the street. We check from inside the attic as well as on the roof, because the wet spot inside is often a few feet from where the water actually enters.

Replacing the metal, cutting the reglet, then soaking it

Caulk smeared over a failed joint usually buys a season at most. The repair that lasts replaces the failed metal. On the sides, step pieces get woven in with each course of shingle or tile, so every piece sheds water onto the one below it. Above those, counter pieces are set into a groove cut along a mortar line, called a reglet, then bent down to cover the step pieces and sealed in the groove. Wide chimneys get one more part: a small peaked saddle, or cricket, built on the uphill side so water splits around the chimney instead of pooling against it. Tile roofs, common in Beverly Hills and Brentwood, need the tile lifted and reset with care so nothing cracks. Flat roofs get a different detail again. We match the metal and the method to the roof you have, rather than reaching for a single kit that suits none of them well.

When the work is done we run water over the joint with a hose and check the attic for any sign of it coming through. Only then do we call it finished. Pricing follows the inspection, because the scope swings widely: one lifted counter piece is a short job, while a full replacement on a tile roof with a new cricket is a much larger one. You see the photos and the written price before anything is removed. If the brick itself has soaked up years of water, it may need repointing or a breathable water repellent once it dries out, and we will point that out instead of leaving it for later. Homes close to the water in Malibu often do better with stainless or copper, which stand up to salt longer. Chimney Flashing Repair in Pacific Palisades

Here the smoke call often comes from a house that was just rebuilt or remodeled: a new tight envelope pulls air down the old flue, or a new roofline now sits higher than the chimney. Owners who stayed through the January 2025 fire also ask us whether heat or ash reached the flue, which a camera answers.

Chimney Flashing Repair in Beverly Hills

Large Beverly Hills living rooms often have wide, tall fireplace openings that look grand but are too large for the flue above them. That mismatch is a classic cause of smoke spilling at the top of the opening, and a smoke guard or glass doors usually cure it without changing the look much.

Chimney Flashing Repair in Brentwood

Big Brentwood houses often have two or three fireplaces sharing one masonry stack. When one fire is lit, smoke can drift down a neighboring flue into another room, a problem that looks like a leak but is really a short flue partition or uneven flue heights at the top.

Chimney Flashing Repair in Malibu

Malibu homes face wind from two directions: onshore breezes most afternoons and hard offshore gusts in fire season. A chimney that draws well on a calm night can puff smoke back into the room when the wind comes over the ridge, so we often look at cap shape before anything else.

Chimney Flashing Repair in Santa Monica

Many Santa Monica houses share a lot line closely with taller neighbors, and a two-storey addition next door can leave an old chimney sitting in a wind shadow. That is a common cause of smoke rolling out of the fireplace on a breezy evening even when the flue is clean.

Chimney Flashing Repair in West Hollywood

In multi-unit buildings, one chimney stack can serve several fireplaces, and a smoky unit may be caused by a neighbor's fire or an old shared flue. We check which flue is which before suggesting any fix, and we note when the work needs the owner or HOA on board.
